Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a remarkably useful material that is utilized in a myriad of applications. Steel is used in over 55% of cars. The kind of alloy used in its production determines its versatility, since they affect the strength, durability and performance. The manner in which metal is cooled can have a major impact on its microstructure and therefore, its overall properties. It is manipulated in order to achieve specific characteristics like machinability yielding strength, and resistance to corrosion.

In its simplest form steel is iron that has been alloyed with various elements to improve its physical properties and make it suitable for certain uses. The proportions of the additional alloying elements determines what category of steel it belongs to and its overall performance in various applications.

For instance stainless steel is composed of a minimum of 11% chromium. This makes it resistant to corrosion. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications like kitchen utensils and cutlery. Tool steel, for instance, has an exceptionally high hardness and abrasion resistance that makes it a favorite for hand machines and tools. Carbon steels are also suited to a wide range of applications due to their superior ductility. Electrical steel, on the other hand is a very specialized grade of steel that has silicon (typically around 3%). This increases its magnetic properties and decreases losses from eddy currents, making it great for transformer cores as Full Report well as electric motor laminations.
