Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea of her secret identity. Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous criminal underworld, Helen’s employer asks Sam to protect her. Bingo, the owner of the guitar shop where Sam gets his guns, is played by Rat Scabies, a member of the classic punk band The Damned.
Meet Helen Dawson (Keira Knightley), a normal mother of two married to a politician, right?
Wrong, she’s actually been a spy since before she met the politician and has been supplying the country’s secrets to a spy organization called The Black Doves and they’ve been selling them to the highest bidder for years. Unfortunately for Helen’s boss, Helen has started having an affair and when Helen’s new lover is killed, she goes on a high-value mission to find his killer. During her mission, Helen soon discovers that her lover’s murder may be connected to the death of the Chinese ambassador.
It was these great action scenes that kept me very interested throughout the series
She also gets involved in numerous shootouts (which reminded me of Shoot ‘em Up and John Wick), hand-to-hand combat (which proved she’s definitely not a damsel in distress) and explosive lucky escapes (which will keep you guessing). And I didn’t even get bored during the flashback scenes showing how Helen got into espionage because those scenes also had some great shootouts. I also enjoyed the witty banter that Helen and her spy partner Sam (Ben Whishaw) deliver very well.

For example, after having an explosive escape, Helen dislocates her shoulder and has to put it back together by slamming her arm into a wall. And Helen said, ‘You should have seen me push two humans out of me that same afternoon.’” However, while I never got bored and certainly didn’t think this series was too long and would have been better as a feature film, I do think the final episode could have been 10 minutes and 20 minutes shorter and towards the end of the series, I thought it was a little too complicated. I understand that they were trying to set up the last episode for a second season, but I still think they could have done it if they had made the series a little shorter.

I also think that if they do a second season, Helen’s husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) should be portrayed as a stronger character, because throughout the series Helen has to keep sneaking around to investigate her lover’s murder, but even when Wallace starts to get suspicious, at the end of the series, he never confronts her about her secret. Despite these minor issues, I would definitely watch a second season and would happily watch this series as well and buy it on DVD.
